Earnest Carl Utendorffer, or “Speck” as his family and dear friends would call him, owned an ice shop and soda house. He’d deliver ice blocks by a horse-drawn carriage when he wasn’t sliding into first base on this time off. Speck was a friendly team player, much like our Grenache Rose. Serve chilled.
Bright, lean and fresh, the Speck Grenache Rose is the perfect pool side pounder for this spring and summer. Opening up with aromatics of fresh tangerine, meyer lemon and other members of the citrus family, the palate follows suit with flavors of Italian Blood orange, under ripe strawberries and the slightest hint of savory tones. This is wine is designed for day drinking on a boat, by the pool, or the perfect wine to start the evening at your friend’s BBQ.
The Ghielmetti Vineyard is located in the far-east corner of the Livermore Valley. It sits roughly 200 ft above sea level at the base, and rises to nearly 1000 ft. The vineyard is made up of several gravelly loam based soils and has varying slopes and elevations that were perfectly matched with the varieties, clones and root stocks that are growing at the site. The Grenache tends to produce high tuned red fruit flavors and has moderate to bright acidity every vintage. I chose this as the site for our Rose because of its beautiful feminine style as a red wine.
The grapes were sorted, pressed whole cluster and racked to tank. After settling for two days, 75% juice was racked to another tank and the remainder into neutral oak barrels. The wine was fermented with Rhone4600. The tank fermented portion was held at 48 degrees which drove a long cool ferment that lasted 22 days. Red Grenache was blended in right after it was pressed for a shade of color and varietal depth. After fermentation was complete, the wine in barrel was topped and aged sur lee for 3 months with stirring every week.
