Tasting Notes

For the first time in 2012, we decided to bring in more Petit Verdot than needed for our Bordeaux blends and produced this single varietal offering. We were extremely happy with the results and decided to continue the trend in 2013 as well! On the nose, a medley of wild blackberries, raspberries and blueberries dipped in chocolate and rolled in ground coffee shavings. The palate follows suit with rich black fruit dominating. The wine is rich and mouth filling with a rustic tannic structure and high tuned acid driven red fruit undertones. The tannin and acid suggest the wine will lay down for some time.

Vineyard Sources

The Ghielmetti Vineyard is located east of Crane Ridge in the Livermore Valley on Ruus Rd. This 64 acre site is planted with all five of the noble Bordeaux varieties. The elevations of the vineyard vary from 200 feet near the Valley floor to nearly 800 feet above sea level near the southside of the region where views of the Valley from the peak are absolutely breathtaking. The Ghielmetti Vineyard gives us the most balanced wines to date for this variety.

Production

Three tons of Petit Verdot was picked, sorted and destemmed in late October and allowed to cold soak in our 48 degree room. After inoculation each bin was punched down manually three times daily until pressing. The wine was pumped into both new French oak as well as second use American oak and cellared for over a year. After racking, and a series of blending trials, the final blend was put together to showcase the varietal as well as the vineyard.
